dal
leah | 03.31.2020
this is a modified version of my mom's actual dal recipe. hers uses onions
in the tadka which walker can't eat, so i use garlic instead. this is a
pretty bare bones recipe and i don't know that other people will like it
unless they're already familiar with dal. it's also vegan? if that's a
thing people care about?
honestly if you're white, you'd probably be better served by following
someone else's dal recipe. this does not have the ~flavors you're
expecting from desi food.
ingredients:
- rice
- 1 cup red lentils
- 1/4 tsp turmeric
- 1 serrano pepper, split lengthwise
- 1-2 tomatoes, diced
- 4 tbsp oil
- 4 cloves garlic, thinly sliced
method:
- start cooking the rice.
-
rinse the lentils, then add to a pot with the turmeric, serrano, and
enough water to cover by a couple inches. bring to a simmer.
-
when the lentils become soft and start falling apart, whisk or blend to
desired consistency, adding more water as necessary. salt to taste.
-
add diced tomatoes and continue simmering until the tomatoes are mushy.
-
heat oil in a small pan and add garlic. cook garlic until it starts to
brown.
- pour garlic and oil into the lentil pot and stir to combine.
- serve.
